Hello everyone! I'd like to share a recipe for fried tofu balls in spicy sauce, for those who love it soft and juicy with a bit of spiciness.
Ingredients
- 3 pieces of tofu
- 1/2 of a shallot
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 piece of wood ear mushroom (soaked in water for about 1 hour)
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground pepper
- 3/4 teaspoon of salt
Ingredients needed to make the spicy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of oil
- 2 fresh green chilies (thinly sliced)
- 2 ripe tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- Cornstarch slurry (mix half a teaspoon of cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of water)
- 3 tablespoons of thinly sliced spring onion
Step-by-step instructions
1. First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line the baking tray you'll use in the oven with oil-absorbing paper.
2. Squeeze the tofu until dry, then mash it. Then transfer it into a bowl.
Finely chop the shallot, garlic, and mushroom. Then add them into the bowl with the tofu.
3. In another small bowl, mix together the honey, soy sauce, ground pepper, and salt until well combined.
4. Next, shape the tofu and shallot mixture into small balls. Then place them into the prepared baking tray, put it into the oven, and bake for about 20 minutes. (After about 10 minutes, flip the tofu balls to the other side)
5. Next, we need to prepare the spicy sauce.
Remove the core of the tomatoes, then put them into a blender. Add 1 tablespoon of water and blend until you get a smooth tomato puree.
Heat a pan and add 1 tablespoon of oil. Once the oil is hot, add the chilies and stir-fry for about 2 minutes. Then reduce the heat, pour in the tomato puree, and simmer for about 5 minutes.
6. Once the tomato mixture turns a deep red color, add the soy sauce and honey, and simmer for about 2 minutes. Then add the cornstarch slurry and mix well until combined. After that, add the tofu balls and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
7. Just before taking it off the stove, sprinkle in the spring onion.
And there you have it - delicious fried tofu balls in a spicy sauce! Readers can also make this using fried bean curd balls instead of tofu.
