A university in Texas, USA, has published research showing that drinking too little water is linked to a decline in intelligence.
This was around the end of 2014. According to that research, the following was found: When people's bodies lose about 1 to 2 percent of their water content, they often don't even realize that they've become dehydrated.
Because of this, most people only drink water when they feel thirsty. In fact, this is not a good habit. Drinking water only when thirsty means that you're only responding once your body's systems have already urgently and officially demanded water because they need it. So which part of the body uses water? The brain uses it too.
If the brain doesn't get enough water, it can lead to dizziness, memory impairment, and reduced concentration, as well as headaches and even fainting. This is a state in which the brain's need for water has become extremely high. If you only go drink water when you feel thirsty, that means your internal organs are only asking for it once they urgently need it — meaning your water level has already dropped by at least 2 percent below normal.
Therefore, it's said that people who are dehydrated have poorer brain health and memory compared to those who stay well-hydrated, and that not drinking water regularly can lower one's intelligence. That's why it's recommended that you make a habit of drinking water consistently, whether you're out and about or working.
