It wouldn't be wrong to say that tea is a key part of social and cultural life. People often serve and drink tea when hosting guests or during breakfast. However, certain combinations can be toxic to the body and can limit nutrient absorption. If you're a tea lover, here are some foods and drinks you shouldn't pair with tea.
Iron-rich vegetables
Pairing iron-rich vegetables with tea limits iron absorption in the body. This is because dried tea leaves contain tannins and oxalates, which inhibit the absorption of iron from foods.
Lemon juice
You shouldn't drink lemon juice right before or right after drinking tea. Combining tea leaves with lemon juice makes the tea acidic and can cause constipation. Drinking it in the morning can cause problems like acid reflux and heartburn, so if you're already experiencing acidity, it's best to avoid this tea combination altogether.
Ginger
Foods containing ginger should be avoided when drinking tea, as they can cause stomach problems such as gas, acidity, or constipation.
Cold foods
Never combine hot tea with cold food. Eating them together disrupts the digestive process, and consuming foods of different temperatures together can weaken digestion and cause discomfort. Avoid eating cold foods for at least 30 minutes after drinking hot tea.
Yogurt
Since both tea and yogurt are naturally acidic, drinking tea right after eating food containing yogurt can cause stomach pain and digestive problems.
Highly acidic foods
Highly acidic foods like oranges can interfere with the absorption of catechins (antioxidants) found in tea. Consuming acidic foods together with tea at the same time can reduce the amount of catechins the body is able to absorb.
Sweet foods
Sweet foods like cakes, biscuits, and chocolate can enhance the flavor of tea, but consuming too much sugar can raise blood sugar levels, leading to energy crashes and other health problems.
Oily foods
Fried or oily foods are difficult to digest. While tea can help with digestion, pairing it with oily foods will still make digestion difficult.
Fruits
Although most nutritionists recommend eating fruit along with a cup of tea, eating them together can cause acidity and other digestive problems. So if you plan to eat them together, it's best to leave a gap of at least 30 minutes.
Strong-flavored foods
Foods like garlic, onions, hot fish sauce, curries, and chilies that are spicy or strongly flavored can overpower the delicate taste of tea, making it hard to fully appreciate the tea's aroma and flavor. So it's best to choose light, flavorful snacks that don't overpower the taste of your tea.
